A glimpse of the Pyrenees
Entering the most remote area of the Basque territory, in its eastern part, today's tour begins with a first approach to the foothills of the highest Pyrenees from the French side. In this approach route, we will stop in beautiful villages that seem to be taken out of Grimm's fairy tales. Crossing a beautiful and lush forest, almost magical, of beech and ancient stones and observed by some ancient dolmen, we will gain altitude until we appear, almost suddenly, before the majestic beauty of the mountain range. Needless to say, this will be an obligatory stop to enjoy all this beauty and have a snack before continuing.
We still have the delight of a stretch of high mountain road that awaits us. A traverse through a shepherd's domain and a sanctuary for vultures and eagles that will eventually lead us, down the mountain, to the old Donibane Garazi, our last stop of the day. Garazi, that you may know as Saint Jean de Pied de Port, where pilgrims to Santiago begin their journey, is a medieval-walled city and capital of the last free and sovereign kingdom of Navarre. Perhaps the one referred to by Shakespeare in his play Love's Labour's Lost, the one from which the brilliant author expected nothing more than that it would become the “Wonder of the World”?
